Use a lubricant that doesn t attract dirt. Lay the chain on the garage floor while you complete the repair. With the gears back in place tighten the chain as directed in your owner s manual. Shine the flashlight directly at the gear set.

Start by unplugging the motor. Replace the cover on the garage door opener plug it back in and start enjoying your now functioning garage door opener. If not your opener might simply be shot and you ll need a new one. Remove retaining screws from the cover.

Test your repair with the garage door disconnected from the opener trolley. Then install the helical gear assembly. Pull the chain off the motor unit sprocket and out of the chain spreader. Remove the outer nut and lock washer from the trolley threaded shaft and pull the threaded shaft out of the trolley.

Coat the gear teeth with new grease. If you have a screw drive opener you ll need to grease several spots along the rail gear at least once or twice a year. If the gears have screwed up teeth you can likely just replace them to solve the problem. No matter what type of garage door opener you have you should always lube the rail where it comes in contact with the trolley carriage.

Slide the outer trolley away from the inner trolley. Put a thin layer of the grease included in the kit on the gear.
