I have the unusual assignment of downgrading finishes in a residence.
How to age shiney gold door handles.
I used boxes and some egg crate material i had on hand to hold the door knobs in place.
Don t forget to spray the underside part of the knob.
I have aged chain by soaking it in acid place in oversized glass bowl with just enough to cover object wait an hour and fill bowl with cool water to overflowing to dilute the acid.
Check the back of your can for the re coat time.
For a softer look coat ornate light fixtures in brass or gold with a matte gray wash.
I love the look and will try it next time i age hardware.
To avoid removal i m looking for product s and techniques to dull or age the many fixtures involved.
So that got it half way there.
To do this schlage recommends starting with a mild liquid dishwashing soap detergent mixed with water.
Wipe off a little bit but leave it on mostly.
Immediately dry all surfaces with a clean towel.
Since shiny brass is so similar to shiny gold we are going to spray paint the gold finish to make it look like antique brass instead of shiny brass.
Wipe on a dab of gold.
Many fixtures such as sinks plumbing fixtures and door hardware are gold gilded.
Using water only wipe surfaces again to remove any detergent left behind.
Tone down gold plated fixtures.
You can get egg crate material at any home improvement store but styrofoam or old boxes are a cheaper option.
The type of gray wash depends on your fixture or cabinet knobs undertone and your room s color scheme.
Luckily changing gold into brass only requires a little spray paint.
Get paint all you need to get is a metallic brass spray paint and a regular black spray paint.
