30 opening 34 wide door.
How much space do sliding barn doors need.
You need the right kind of space a barn door can free up space compared to a swinging door but it also needs room to slide along its track.
Sliding barn doors work best when there is enough empty wall space next to the opening that the door can slide completely open.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
We offer styles that accommodate lower clearances modern jumbo horseshoe but you will still need about 5 inches.
For the door height we recommend measuring from the floor to the top of the opening.
The height is a bit trickier based on the casing and header.
Jumbo wheels require 8 inches.
If you re mounting a single door you need wall space on one side of your opening that is at least the width of the door so it can slide completely open.
We recommend 1 1 2 to 2 of overhang on each side.
In this example the total height is 80 once mounted the door will hang 1 off the floor which will add the bit of coverage you need at the top of the opening.
For our standard barn door hardware you need 6 inches of above opening clearance.
The barn door should be wide enough to completely cover the doorway with an inch or two of.
You must also make sure that you have enough room on one side of the opening for a single door and either side of the opening for a double door in order for your barn doors to open properly.
If you are installing double doors check on both sides.
To have privacy the door usually overlaps the opening by an inch so that a 2 6 opening will require a 2 8 door.
Double barn doors require open wall space on both sides of the doorway.
The determining factor in how high or how wide you want to go is just how much you want your sliding door to overlap with the opening.
However we realize that not everyone has standard door openings so we offer several sizes of sliding barn doors to help fit your needs with the following measurements.
Since the door sits off the wall in order to slide it must be wider that the opening to fully hide the opening.
Fortunately it may be possible to relocate these fixtures.
Double track bypass requires 11 inches.
Single track bypass requires 7 inches.
Once you ve established your desired door size.
Remember barn doors need to slide at least as far as the opening in one direction or the other.
Next you need to make sure that there s enough empty space next to the opening to accommodate the door as it slides open.
Keep in mind that light switches electrical outlets and heating and cooling registers on the walls next to the opening could be in the way.
