Pendants should hang 12 20 inches below an 8 foot ceiling. Others have also used balloons roughly pendant sized. The pendant height can also be measured up from the surface below the light. However if you have higher ceilings you will need to raise them slightly but by how much.

For example for a 9 foot ceiling the pendant should hang 15 23 inches below. A wall sconce near the front door should be about one third the height of the door. A rule some interior designers use is to add 7 8cm for each 30cm. For a 9 foot door hang the light at about 6 feet from the ground.
